GRPL 2012

Every year Muslim Hands tackles poverty using both conventional and innovative ways. For the past three years Muslim Hands has hosted the GRPL (Green Ribbon Premier League). This event which would raise thousands of rands for a noble cause was aimed at creating the awareness amongst the youth of our community so that the sense of social responsibility does not end with a generation.

On the 14th of April 2012, between 16 -20 teams will meet at the Montague Action Sports Arena to battle it out for the top spot. However before this big day, they will devout hours and days in creating awareness and raising funds to support this noble cause.

The GRPL Action Cricket Tournament is merely the fun and games behind Green Ribbon Week at Muslim Hands. Teams that had entered were required to raise R5 000 for the Innocent Children of War and Poverty. It is this exact activity that encourages the youth to shoulder some of the social responsibility that is so quickly fading in a fast paced world. GRPL itself and the raising of funds help create awareness for the cause and allow the youth to feel a sense of caring in a way they enjoy.
What started out as a simple indoor cricket tournament in aid of innocent children of war and poverty, has now evolved into a competitive fundraiser displaying sporting ability combined with social responsibility and fundraising for the South African Children’s Fund.

Over the years the MH International Children’s Fund has assisted in the most devastating situations around the world. An ideal example is the MH Children’s Fund Project in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan has been in a continuous state of conflict for the past 20 years since the Russian invasion in 1979. In 1996 the Taliban emerged as a major power and by the beginning of 1997 had control of two thirds of the country. It has an estimated population of 17 million, of which nearly 1/3 was killed, disabled or displaced.

War has devastated this country. It is left with no communication system, poor sanitation, damaged roads and an ineffective educational system. Teachers are scarce and unmotivated as they were paid very little every few months resulting in most professionals emigrating. Schools books, furniture, teaching equipment and materials hardly exist, except for those few sponsored by UNICEF and other NGOs (non-governmental organizations).

Due to continued conflicts in Afghanistan many people have been killed, disabled or displaced and this has had a perceptible and profound effect on the countries children. Many children have lost their parents, have parents that are disabled, or belong to families that have been displaced.

Being left with nowhere to turn, many of them have ended up in the streets of major cities such as Kabul, doing menial work just to get by.
The Muslim Hands Plan

Muslim Hands International will open up a new centre in a shape of a Complex and the project will provide all the necessary start up assets.

The following activities will be undertaken:
• Identification of interested and deserving children to participate in the program.
• Selection of war affected children and working street children who have been deprived of education due to war, financial constraints and displacement.
• Purchasing and installing of supplies and equipment
• Undertaking of skills transfer initiatives.
• Supervision, monitoring and reporting of activities and progress to donor and support agencies.

The beneficiaries of this project will be children who are victims of war, student instructors, staff member and the community at large. The children at the centre will have access to physical treatment while having the privilege of a state of the art educational facility. In addition to this, shorter courses will be hosted for vocational training so as to empower the community.

Since this project is particularly designed to cater for the immediate as well as long term needs of the children, it would be essential that focused education be made a priority at the centre. Rehabilitation of any kind plays an important role in the re-education physically and psychologically.
This Year’s Tournament

Just as the past local and international events have seen to victims of war and poverty around the globe, so too this year MHSA is focusing the tournament on the South African Children’s Fund.

With MHSA being involved with many local orphanages, education, rehabilitation and medical needs of the less fortunate, it becomes essential that we make a success once again.
